Senior school includes years 10, 11, and 12 and can be a combination of a variety of pathways that include academic and vocational pathways ie SAT’s. A full range of subjects are offered at this school. We also support students studying other subjects through VSS, SDE, TAFE and private training organisations.
In Year 10 Semester 1, students continue to study the compulsory Key Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and Health & Physical Education. Students also choose two elective subjects to compliment their studies. In semester 2 students are offered choices in the Key Learning areas which reflect subject choice in years 11 and 12. This opportunity provides students with an introductory phase and enables students to make more appropriate subject choices in year 11 and 12.
In Year 11 & 12, the school offers Authority (Academic) and Authority Registered (Vocational) Subjects. Students study a minimum of six subjects at this level, which includes English and a Mathematics subject.
Our school also offers various opportunities to interested students to obtain traineeships and school based apprenticeships. Students attend school for 3 or 4 days whilst attending a paid work placement for 1 or 2 days.
Work or career education is vital. Students are assisted to prepare a Student Education Training Plan (SETP) in year 10 and continue to update this through years 11 and 12. Parents are invited to view, sign and participate in an interview at the end of year 10 centred on this SETP. This process further assists students to make appropriate subject choices for years 11 and 12. A guidance officer is available to students to assist with this process. Work experience is compulsory for year 10 students and this process of work experience is supported on a voluntary basis in years 11 and 12. This work experience program often leads directly into a SAT program (Student Apprentice and Traineeship program)
The QCE is Queensland's senior school qualification, which is awarded to eligible students usually at the end of Year 12. The QCE recognises broad learning options and offers flexibility in what, where and when learning occurs. The QCE recognises broad learning options and offers flexibility in what is learnt, as well as where and when learning occurs. A wide range of learning can contribute towards the QCE, including senior school subjects, vocational education and training, workplace learning recognised by the QSA and university subjects’ undertaken while at school. Achievements in different types of learning attract different credit values. A credit is the minimum amount of learning at the set standard that can contribute towards the QCE. Students must have at least 20 credits in the required pattern, and fulfil other requirements to be awarded a QCE.
If students wish to qualify for an O.P. (Overall Position), they must study a minimum of three continuous Authority Subjects for four semesters and must have a total of twenty semesters of Authority Subjects during the two years (i.e. equivalent of five board subjects).
